It can be used as a matrix material to dope rare earth ions (such as Eu³⁺, Tb³⁺) for the preparation of luminescent devices or biological markers (such as GdPO₄:Eu³⁺ emitting red light). Due to gadolinium's high neutron absorption cross-section (e.g., Gd-157), GdPO₄ can be used for neutron shielding or nuclear waste solidification. Gadolinium ions (Gd³⁺) have paramagnetic properties, and GdPO₄ nanoparticles may be used in the research of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents. It can also serve as a carrier or active component in certain catalytic reactions
